Every minute from 1 to 60: the conversion chart

How to convert hours and minutes to decimal

Take the minutes, divide them by 60, and leave the whole hours alone: 7 hours 45 minutes equals 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75. Two decimal places is what payroll usually rounds to, half up: 7:20 comes out as 7.33, and 7:40 comes out as 7.67.

How to convert decimal hours to minutes

Multiply whatever follows the decimal point by 60. So 0.83 hours works out to 49.8 minutes, which is about 50, while 7.4 hours gives 7 hours 24 minutes.

Why adding daily decimals can drift

Rounding each day separately before you add them can shift the week by a hundredth. Each of five days at 7:20 comes to 7.33, so five days add up to 36.65. The full week of 36 hours 40 minutes works out to 36.67 hours. Total the minutes before converting, and convert only once, which is what the time card calculator does.
