You start in the morning and finish in the afternoon. Every cell lists hours and minutes first, then decimal hours. You can subtract a lunch break only if it goes unpaid (29 CFR 785.19).
How 7:30 to 4:30 is worked out
Between the 7:30am start and the 4:30pm finish you get 4 hours 30 minutes up to noon and 4 hours 30 minutes after it, so the shift spans 9 hours. Deduct a 30-minute unpaid lunch and the total drops to 8 hours 30 minutes. In decimal form that is 8.50, since 30 minutes is a half hour.
Is a 7:30 to 4:30 week overtime?
Not by the day: overtime under federal rules counts hours beyond 40 within one workweek. Work 7:30 to 4:30 for five days with a 30-minute lunch and you get 42 hours 30 minutes. That puts 2.50 hours of the week into overtime. That total turns into pay with the overtime pay calculator.
If your shift is different, use the hours calculator. Use the calculator for time cards when you have punches for a full week.
